Our Song of the Week is "Devil" by Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside.
Ford has had quite the wild ride recently, especially if you consider that she was crashing on the sofa of a house full of musicians and artists (including one of our KZME DJs) when she first moved to Portland in 2006. KZME didn't even exist back then, and neither did her band, but her talent and energy sure did.
"Devil" is a track from Untamed Beast, her second album. The first record, 2011's Dirty Beast, brought what seemed like quick success and national exposure, including a guest spot on the David Letterman show, but she's been at it a long time, working hard touring the country and the world.
At the moment, she's touring Europe, but heading back to the States for shows this summer, including Bend June 23 and Pickathon in August.
Ford shared with us her handwritten "manifesto," which we've transcribed below, and which every woman and girl should keep in mind whenever she questions herself. But really, Ford's clearest manifesto is her music, where she puts theory and beliefs into practice. Her sound is rollicking, raucous, and powerful. She pulls no punches.
Sallie Ford's Manifesto (as handwritten in magic marker and given to KZME):
this record is about becoming
it's time for a girl
to infiltrate the boys world of
rock n roll
and grab it by the balls
to me, rock n roll isn't a genre
it's an energy
this generation doesn't need genres
we need visceral
this is my story
the modern woman
i represent femininity

Our Song of the Week is "Autopilots" by Portland band Incredible Yacht Control.
It's spacey, sometimes staccato, lo-fi feedback and fuzz. Buried deep in the mix are mockingly serious, somewhat nonsensical lyrics that add mystery to the pop fizz.
"Autopilots" is off IYC's fourth album, but we’re eagerly awaiting a new album, Resident Sea. It's due out in "spring 2013" (according to their website), which, if my calendar is right, means right now.
The band line-up has changed recently, with guitar player Kyle Parisi “tendering his (hopefully temporary) resignation in order to focus on his new project, Soft Skills.” And they've joined the Marmoset Music roster of creative, strategic soundmakers, so the world will likely be hearing more of IYC soon.
No upcoming shows listed on their website, but we are staying tuned.
